Phone fell in the sea: why salt water is worse
Salt leaves residue and speeds up oxidation. See what to do at the beach.

If your phone got wet, take it out of the water, turn it off, dry the outside and take it to a repair shop as soon as you can. Don't turn it on, don't charge it, and don't use rice or a hair dryer. Read the step-by-step guide and the mistakes that damage phones the most.
Summary
In the first 10 minutes, the goal is to cut the power and remove the excess liquid, nothing more. When a phone gets wet, water does the most serious damage when it reaches the battery while it is connected to the board, so turning the phone off fast matters more than any drying trick.
Follow the order below. Don't skip steps, and don't test the phone along the way.
Turning it off comes first because water alone does little harm; the serious damage comes from electric current flowing through the liquid. With the battery connected, water creates paths between the tracks on the board and can burn tiny parts in seconds. By turning the phone off, you stop that process and gain time.
Don't bother with "checking if it still works." That test, done while the phone is wet inside, is one of the most common ways to turn a simple problem into a board repair.
Even if the screen lights up and everything seems normal, the phone still needs to be checked. Water left inside keeps causing damage, and the fault often shows up hours or days later, as a battery that gets hot, a screen with spots, or a phone that shuts off on its own. Turn it off anyway and take it in for a check.
The most common mistakes come from the "tips" that circulate online: rice, hair dryers, ovens and chargers. None of them removes water from inside the board, and several of them make the damage worse.
| What people do | Why it seems like a good idea | What really happens |
|---|---|---|
| Put it in rice | Rice absorbs moisture | It doesn't reach the board, and grains and dust can get into the charging port |
| Use a hair dryer | Hot air dries fast | The heat pushes water deeper inside and can damage the battery and the screen |
| Turn it on to test | To see if it still works | Current runs through the liquid and can burn the board |
| Put it on the charger | To have battery to ask for help | Power with moisture in the port causes a short circuit and corrodes the contacts |
| Shake or tap the phone | To get the water out | It spreads the liquid to areas that were still dry |
| Blow on it or use compressed air | To dry the openings | It pushes the water further into the phone |
Rice doesn't help in any meaningful way, and you lose valuable time. The water that matters is under shields and between tiny components on the board, and no grain of rice gets there. While the phone sits in a bowl for a day, corrosion keeps spreading.
Strong heat warps the battery, loosens glue and damages the screen. If you want to dry something, use only the air in the room, out of the sun. Heat is the worst option, because its damage is permanent and adds to the damage from the water.
Water damages a phone in two stages: first a short circuit, if the phone is on, and then oxidation, which is the slow corrosion of the contacts. That is why a phone can work right after it falls and then stop the next day.
Oxidation is similar to rust. The metals on the board, the connectors and the pins react with water and air, forming a green or white residue that insulates the contacts. Over time, this residue grows and starts to cause problems with charging, sound, the camera or the phone's overall operation.
Many phones resist splashes and short dips, but that protection depends on rubber seals that age. After a drop, a replaced screen, or just the passing years, the seal loses effectiveness. This advice applies to any phone: if it got wet, treat it as if it had no protection at all, at least until someone opens it and checks.
Some signs show that liquid got in, even if you didn't see the phone fall in the water. They help you decide whether to take it in right away.
Not every liquid causes the same damage: fresh water is the least harmful, and liquids with salt or sugar are much worse, because they leave residue. Knowing what got the device wet helps the technician choose the right treatment.
| Liquid | Risk level | Why it changes the repair |
|---|---|---|
| Tap water, rain or pool water | Medium | It oxidizes the contacts; chlorinated pool water makes it a bit worse |
| Sea water | High | The salt conducts current and stays in the tracks even after it dries |
| Soda, juice or coffee | High | The sugar sticks, hardens and traps moisture inside the board |
| Beer or other alcoholic drinks | High | It mixes sugar, acid and water, and leaves residue that is hard to clean |
| Sweat, steam and bathroom humidity | Low to medium | It gets in slowly, and the damage usually shows up over time |
At the beach, salt is the big problem, because it keeps conducting electricity and corroding even after the water dries. If that is your case, time matters even more. See the guide Phone fell in the sea: why salt water is worse.
Sugar stays on the board like glue. Even when the phone looks dry on the outside, this residue keeps moisture in and attracts dirt. In these cases, waiting for it to dry is not enough; the phone needs to be opened and cleaned.
The longer water stays inside, the more contacts corrode, and the more expensive recovery tends to become. It works like a ladder: in the first hours, the phone can usually be recovered; after days, it can turn into a board repair.
With the phone off, the water has only just started to act. At this stage, opening the phone, removing the battery and cleaning the board usually solves the problem without lasting damage.
Oxidation has already started. The most common symptoms are charging problems, sound that fades out and a camera with spots. Cleaning still helps, but one or more parts may need to be replaced.
In many cases, corrosion has reached the tracks on the board. At that point, the repair is no longer just cleaning and becomes a board repair, done with microsoldering, which is soldering of very small parts. The time and the cost go up, and it is not always possible to recover everything.
Help Cell specializes in wet phones and board repair, with technicians who have more than 10 years at the bench and a store at Floripa Shopping, in Florianópolis. The service follows a simple process: open, assess the damage, clean and test.
The time depends on the damage and is only agreed after the assessment. The price is also set after the assessment: it varies with the model, the liquid, the contact time and the parts affected. To see how it works for your device, see the Phone got wet page (Android descaling), and for iPhone owners, the page on wet iPhone and descaling.
The price is not fixed, because each wet phone arrives in its own condition. The factors that matter most are listed below, and the price is sent on WhatsApp after you describe the case.
A few simple steps help the technician and protect your data. Use the lists below as a guide.
Would you rather talk before you go? You can message us on WhatsApp, describe what happened and get advice on what to do until you reach the store. If the liquid spilled on the keyboard of an Apple laptop, the steps are different; see MacBook with liquid on the keyboard: steps and chemical cleaning.
The price depends on the model, the liquid, how long the phone stayed wet and the parts affected. Send the model and what happened on WhatsApp +55 48 99110-7381, and Help Cell will send you the price.
The sooner, the better. Ideally, take it in the same day, because oxidation starts quickly and gets worse with each hour. With sea water or a sweet liquid, the hurry is even greater.
No. Rice doesn't remove water from inside the board, and it wastes your time. The right thing to do is turn the phone off, dry the outside and take it to a repair shop so they can open it.
Don't turn it on. With water inside, the current can burn parts on the board and turn a simple problem into a bigger repair. If it was on when it got wet, turn it off as soon as possible.
When the phone is opened and cleaned in time, the data usually stays intact. If the board is badly damaged, nothing can be guaranteed before the assessment. That is why it is best to bring it in quickly and, afterwards, keep your backup up to date.
Yes. The resistance is limited and gets weaker with drops, a replaced screen and the passing of time. If the phone got wet and you are not sure, turn it off and ask for an assessment.
Yes. The store works on phones of all brands, as well as iPad, MacBook and Apple Watch. Help Cell is an independent repair shop, not an Apple authorized service provider, and it does not sell devices.
