What it means to update your phone's software
The software is the part of the phone you don't see: the system that makes the screen, camera, battery and apps work together. Updating means replacing that system with a newer version, without changing any part. The phone stays the same, with your photos, contacts and apps.
Most of the time the update is simple and the phone does it by itself, over Wi-Fi. The store's service is needed when something gets in the way of that process.
iOS and Android: what changes
iOS is the system of the iPhone and iPad, and only Apple releases it. Android is the system of most other phones, and each brand decides when and for which models it releases each version. That is why an older iPhone usually gets updates for longer than many Android phones, and an Android phone may simply have no new version available.
Security update and major update
A small update fixes bugs and closes security gaps, and it is usually quick. A major update replaces the whole system version, changes the look, and needs more space and battery. The major one is the one that causes the most trouble on full or old phones.
When the phone is too old
Every phone reaches a point where the maker stops releasing new versions. That does not mean it is broken. If your model has passed that point, Help Cell will say so clearly, instead of forcing an install that does not exist.

How much does a phone software update cost?
The price depends on the model and on what is blocking the update. A case of not enough space is different from a damaged system. That is why Help Cell does not publish one fixed price: send us the model and the situation on WhatsApp and the answer comes with the price for your case.

What nobody tells you before updating your phone
Most update problems come from small mistakes made before pressing the button. These are the most common ones.
Common mistakes when updating a phone
Updating with a low battery
If the phone shuts off in the middle of the install, the system can be left half done and the phone may not turn on properly. Keep the charger plugged in until the end.
Trying to update with full memory
The update downloads a large file and needs empty space to install. Deleting what is not needed, or copying your photos somewhere else, usually unblocks the process.
Turning off or using the phone during the install
A bar that stops moving does not mean an error. In many cases the phone is still working. Forcing it off too early is the most common way to turn a slow update into a freeze.

Make a copy of your data

Connect to a stable Wi-Fi
Downloading the update over Wi-Fi avoids download failures. Weak mobile data often interrupts the file.

How much does a phone software update cost?

Will I lose my data when updating?
In a normal update, your photos, contacts and apps stay on the phone. Even so, make a copy first: it is your protection against any surprise. Read Will I lose my data when repairing my phone?
My phone has no space to update. What now?
This is one of the most common cases. The way out is to clear space, deleting what you don't use or copying photos and videos somewhere else. Help Cell can help you do this without losing what matters, with Phone data backup.
The update got stuck and the phone no longer turns on. Is there a fix?
Often, yes. When the system is left half done, the phone can be reinstalled at the bench. If the problem is hardware, such as the battery or the board, the check will show it. See also Phone formatting and restore.
Does updating the software make the phone faster?
Sometimes. The update fixes bugs that cause freezing. On very old phones, a new and heavy version can even make it slower. Help Cell will tell you honestly whether it is worth it for your model.
My phone has stopped getting updates. Is that a defect?
No. Every maker stops releasing new versions for older models. The phone keeps working, but it may lose compatibility with some apps. If your phone has reached that point, Help Cell will explain the options.
Does the update have a warranty?
Help Cell services come with a 90-day warranty. It covers the service done against a defect, but it does not cover drops, liquid or misuse after delivery.
What if the phone won't charge, so I can't update it?
