Face ID and True Tone after a screen replacement

When a screen replacement is done well, Face ID keeps working, because its sensors sit outside the display. True Tone is the feature most likely to disappear, and it depends on the part. Here is what to expect and how to test everything before you leave the store.

Summary

  • The Face ID sensors are not part of the screen and, in general, are not touched during the replacement.
  • True Tone can be lost when the new screen does not carry the data from the original one.
  • Face ID that fails right after the repair needs a quick check.
  • Test both features while you are still at the counter, before you pay and leave.

Does Face ID change after an iPhone screen replacement?

It should not. With a screen replacement done carefully, Face ID keeps working as before, because the camera and the sensors that recognize your face are in a separate module at the top of the device.

To read your face, the iPhone projects points of light onto it and reads the pattern they form. All of this happens in that module, not in the glass. The screen is only on the front of it.

Why the technician works near the sensors

When the screen comes off, the technician has to disconnect cables and, on some models, move small parts from the old screen to the new one, such as the earpiece speaker and the front camera. These parts are close to the Face ID module. One loose cable or a part pressed too hard is enough to cause a problem.

The drop itself can be the cause

Many people arrive with a cracked screen and Face ID already failing. A hard hit may have bent the module or loosened the cable before the repair even started. So, if the screen still lets you, test Face ID before the replacement and tell the technician the result.

Why True Tone disappears after the replacement

True Tone is the setting that changes the screen color to match the room light, making white look warmer or cooler. On many iPhones, it disappears when the screen is replaced, because the calibration data is stored in the original screen.

The new screen may arrive without this data. Without it, the iPhone cannot apply the adjustment, and the True Tone option disappears from Control Center or is grayed out. The device keeps working normally, just without this color fine-tuning.

Is there a way to recover True Tone?

In some cases, yes. There is equipment that copies the data from the old screen to the new one, but this depends on the iPhone model and the part used. Help Cell only promises what it tests on the spot, and it explains this before closing the service.

How to check if True Tone is active

Open Control Center and press and hold the brightness control. True Tone appears as an extra button below. If it does not show up, go to Settings, Display & Brightness, and look for the True Tone switch: if it is grayed out or missing, the new screen has lost this feature.

Signs that something went wrong with the repair

A faulty Face ID usually shows clear signs in the first few uses. If any of them shows up after the replacement, go back to the store without waiting.

A message saying Face ID is not available

The iPhone shows a warning that Face ID could not be set up, or the option is grayed out in Settings. This means the system cannot see the module. It may be a loose cable or a damaged sensor.

Your face is not recognized

The iPhone asks for your passcode all the time, even with your face right in front of it. If setting up your face again also fails, the problem is most likely the hardware, not you.

Strange screen, brightness or touch

Brightness that does not adjust on its own, a screen that goes dark near your face during a call, or touch that does not register can point to a sensor or a cable out of place. When the problem comes with stripes, also see the guide on green or black lines on the screen.

What is usually affected by a screen replacement

A screen replacement usually affects only a few features, and the part you choose is what mostly decides the result. The table shows what changes and what should stay the same.

iPhone features after a screen replacement
FeatureWhat usually happens
Face IDShould stay the same. If it fails, check the cable, the sensor and the earlier drop.
True ToneIt may disappear if the new screen does not carry the data from the original one.
Auto-brightnessShould work. If it does not adjust on its own, the light sensor needs to be checked.
Touch and screen colorDepend on the quality of the part. See original or aftermarket screen.
Front camera and earpiece speakerShould work normally. Test a call and a selfie.
Data, photos and appsStay on the device. A screen replacement does not erase anything.

Why the part makes a difference

The more complete and accurate the screen, the lower the chance of losing features. Simpler screens often have more differences in color, brightness and functions. Ask the store which part will be used and what it delivers for your model.

Test Face ID and True Tone before you leave the store

Test everything at the counter, with the technician next to you, before you pay. It is easier to solve it on the spot than to come back days later without knowing what caused the problem. Follow this order.

  1. Lock the iPhone and unlock it with your face, both up close and from a little farther away.
  2. Open Settings, Face ID & Passcode, and check if the option is on.
  3. Open Control Center and check if True Tone appears.
  4. Change the brightness and see if auto-brightness responds.
  5. Make a test call and take a selfie to check the earpiece and the front camera.
  6. Touch the four corners of the screen, looking for touch failures.

If something fails, do this

Show the problem to the technician before you leave and ask for an explanation. If True Tone is the lost feature, ask whether it can be recovered for your model. If Face ID fails, ask for the module to be checked. To arrange the repair, just message us on WhatsApp.

Should you wait to replace the screen?

Usually not. A cracked screen gets worse with use and can affect touch. If you are still unsure, read cracked screen: can you keep using the phone until it is replaced?. The sooner the replacement, the lower the risk that the drop damaged other components.

Frequently asked questions about Face ID and True Tone after a screen replacement

Does replacing the iPhone screen make Face ID stop working?

It should not. Face ID uses sensors at the top of the device that are not part of the screen. The risk appears when these sensors are loosened, damaged or moved during the repair, or when the drop that cracked the screen already hurt the module.

After the replacement, True Tone disappears. Is that normal?

In many cases, yes. True Tone depends on data stored in the original screen, and a new screen may come without it. There is a way to copy this data to the new part, but it depends on the model and the part. Ask before you agree to the service.

What do I do if Face ID fails right after the replacement?

Go back to the store as soon as you can and explain what happened. Restart the device, try setting up your face again in Settings, and show the message that appears. The sooner it is checked, the easier it is to tell whether the repair or the drop caused the problem.

Do I need to set up my face again after replacing the screen?

Usually not, because the face data is stored on the iPhone itself. If Face ID asks for a new setup or fails, setting it up again is the first test, but it will not fix a faulty sensor.

How much does an iPhone screen replacement cost?

The price depends on the model and the part you choose. Send the model on WhatsApp +55 48 99110-7381 and Help Cell will send you the screen replacement price.

How long does a screen replacement take?

On most models, up to 2 hours, while you wait at Floripa Shopping. If the iPhone has another problem too, the store will tell you the time before starting.

Does a screen replacement erase my data?

No. Photos, contacts and apps stay on the device. Even so, make a backup first, if the iPhone still turns on and responds to touch.
