What the phone board is and what fixing it means

The phone board, also called the motherboard, is the green or blue board where the processor, the memory and the circuits for charging, sound and signal are. Fixing the board means finding the tiny part or the electrical path that failed and redoing only that point.

Think of the board as the street map of a small town. The screen, the battery and the camera are buildings connected by these streets. When one street is cut, the building still works but gets nothing. A logic board repair rebuilds the cut section. It does not tear down the whole town to build a new one.

How a logic board repair is done

A logic board repair has three main steps: open and clean the phone, test the board to find the fault, and fix that point with micro-soldering. The order matters, because repairing without finding the cause only delays the problem.

Step 1: open, clean and look

The technician takes the board out of the phone and looks for signs of corrosion, burn marks, cracks or loose solder. If the phone got wet, cleaning the board comes before any other step, because corrosion keeps spreading even after the board is dry.

Step 2: test and find the fault

With measuring tools, the technician checks if each part of the circuit gets the right power. This is how they find out, for example, that the phone does not turn on because one power component has burned out, and not because the whole board is lost.

Step 3: fix with micro-soldering

Micro-soldering is the technique of soldering or replacing parts as small as a grain of sand. Depending on the fault, the technician replaces a component, rebuilds a path in the circuit, or solders back a chip that came loose from the board.

Step 4: test everything again

After the repair, the phone is put back together and tested. It must turn on, charge, and have sound, signal and display. A logic board repair that was not tested well can come back with another symptom a few days later, so this step is never skipped.

When the board cannot be fixed

The board cannot be fixed when the damage is too big, such as a burnt main chip, destroyed traces, or corrosion that has eaten the circuit. In these cases the technician explains why and says that it is not worth pushing further.

• Burnt in several places: an overload or a bad charger can damage many components at the same time.
• Advanced corrosion: corrosion from salt water, like sea water, spreads fast and can destroy the traces.

What makes the board problem worse

The worst thing for a board with a problem is turning the phone on and charging it many times to see if it comes back. Each try can feed a short circuit and burn more components.

• Do not try to turn on a wet phone, and do not plug it in to charge.
• Do not put it in rice: it does not pull moisture out from inside and can leave residue.
• Do not open the phone at home, because the board is fragile and any pressure can break the traces.
• Do not use a hair dryer or an oven: strong heat moves the solder and damages the circuit.
