How to recover photos from a broken phone or one that won't turn on

In most common repairs, like screen and battery replacement, you won't lose data during a phone repair, because the memory is not touched. There is a risk in some cases, and a backup before you hand the phone in solves it.
Summary
Your photos, contacts and messages are stored in the phone's internal memory, a chip on the board that is separate from the screen, the battery and the charging port. That is why most repairs do not touch your data. If you want to know whether you will lose data during a phone repair, check which part will be worked on.
Think of your phone like a house: the screen is the window, the battery is the power box, and the memory is the cabinet where you keep everything. Replacing the window or the power box does not empty the cabinet. The cabinet is only affected when the problem is on the board, or when the repair requires erasing the system.
Your files can be in three places: in the phone's memory, in the cloud (a copy saved on the internet, such as iCloud or Google), and, on some Android phones, on a memory card. What is in the cloud survives any repair. What is only on the phone depends on the type of repair.
Repairs to external parts do not affect your data. Repairs that involve the board, liquid damage or restoring the system do carry a risk, so treat each one as a separate case.
| Repair | Does it touch the memory? | What to do before |
|---|---|---|
| Screen replacement | No | Backup, just in case |
| Battery replacement | No | Backup, just in case |
| Charging port | No | Backup, just in case |
| Liquid damage | Depends on the damage to the board | Turn it off and bring it in right away |
| Board repair | Depends on the fault | Backup, if the phone still turns on |
| Formatting or restoring | Yes, erases everything | Backup required |
The real risk shows up in two cases: when a board repair works on traces or chips near the memory, and when the fix is software and the system has to be reinstalled. In these cases the shop must tell you before starting, and you decide whether to go ahead.

A backup is a copy of your files in a second place. If the phone still turns on, make the copy before you hand it in, either to the cloud or to a computer. It takes a few minutes and protects everything that matters.
In Settings, tap your name, go to iCloud and use the backup option. If your account storage is full, you can also copy to a computer using the cable. Wait for the backup to finish before you disconnect.
In Settings, look for backup or your Google account. Photos can go to Google Photos, and contacts stay in your account. The steps change a little from brand to brand, but the backup menu is usually found by searching in the settings.
Before you hand in the phone, open your cloud account on another device or on a computer and check that your most important photos are there. A backup you never checked is just a hope.
Besides the backup, get the phone ready: write down what matters and remove what is personal and not needed. These short steps prevent problems later.
Features like Find My iPhone or the Google account lock protect you. You do not need to turn anything off out of fear of the repair. If the shop needs something done, it will tell you what to do.
If the phone won't turn on, it may still be possible to save your data. It depends on where the fault is: in many cases the cause is an external part, and the phone comes back with everything inside.
If the screen is broken and doesn't respond to touch, replacing the screen often gives you access back, and your files show up as they were. If the phone died because of a board fault, a check at the workbench tells you whether recovery is possible. To test the repair, the technician has to turn the phone on, which means it may have the screen unlocked or close to your content. So it is worth choosing a repair shop with time in the market and keeping sensitive things protected.
Help Cell has been in business since 2007 and has technicians with more than 10 years at the workbench, with its own staff. To help you compare your options, the guide Authorized or independent repair shop: which one to choose can help.
Almost all data loss comes from rushing or from having no backup, not from the repair itself. These are the most common mistakes we see.
Turning a phone on and off many times after it fell in water, or after it gets stuck on the logo, can make the damage to the board worse, and the memory is on the board. If something unusual happened, turn it off and go to the workbench.
Restoring erases everything. Doing it without a backup, just to see if the fault goes away, is the most common way people lose photos that were saved.
The moment a phone fails is usually the worst time to think about a backup. If the phone still turns on today, make the copy now and keep the automatic backup turned on.
Many people find out too late that the automatic backup stopped months earlier because there was no storage space left. Open your cloud account from time to time and check the date of the last copy.
The price depends on the model and the fault, not on whether your data is kept or not. Send the model and the problem on WhatsApp +55 48 99110-7381 and Help Cell will give you the price.
Not in a normal screen replacement. Photos, contacts and apps are stored in the phone's memory, which is not touched. If the screen is so broken that you can't even unlock the phone, tell us when you drop it off.
No. The battery only supplies power, and your files stay saved in the internal memory. Even so, make a backup before, because any phone that is opened carries some risk.
Often yes, but it depends on the fault. If the problem is the battery or the charging port, the phone turns on again with everything inside. If the board was hit, it has to be checked at the workbench, and the shop will tell you what is possible before any service.
Not necessarily. Water attacks the board, and the memory can stay intact. The sooner the phone is turned off and taken to the workbench, the better the chances. Do not turn it on or charge it to test it.
In some repairs the technician has to turn the phone on to test the new part. You can agree with the shop on the best way to do this, and before you bring it in you can change your passcode to a temporary one and change it back later.
The phone goes through the workbench, and to test it, it may be turned on. So it is worth protecting what is personal and removing from the phone anything you don't want seen. This is a good reason to have a backup and to choose a repair shop you trust.
The Help Cell warranty covers the service and the part that was replaced. It does not replace a backup, which is what protects your photos and chats. See what the warranty covers in the guide on the 90-day warranty.
