How to Recover Photos From a Broken or Dead Phone

To recover photos from a broken phone, first check whether they are already saved in the cloud. If they are not, the way out is to make the phone work well enough to copy the content. The less you touch it and try to turn it on, the better your chances.

Summary

  • Before any repair, check whether your photos are already in your Google or iCloud account.
  • A broken screen, but the phone still turns on, is the easiest case to save.
  • A wet phone should not be turned on or charged.
  • Each wrong attempt lowers your chances of recovering the photos.

What to do first when the phone breaks with photos inside

The first step is to stop: do not restart it, do not keep charging it, and do not do a factory reset. Stay calm and find out what the problem is, because the way to save the photos changes with the defect.

The photos are stored in the phone's internal memory, which is a separate component from the screen and the battery. That is why the phone often seems lost while the photos are still inside, intact. What stops you from seeing them is the path to them: a screen that does not respond, a battery that does not hold a charge, or a fault on the board.

Write down what happened

The clearer the history, the faster the diagnosis. Note whether the phone fell, got wet, overheated, or stopped turning on by itself. Also note whether the screen lights up, whether it vibrates, and whether any sign appears when you plug it in. Bring this information when you ask for help.

Remember the phone passcode

Without the passcode or unlock code, the phone's content is usually protected, and this applies to any technician. Try to remember the lock code and the login for your Google or Apple account. Help Cell does not unlock devices.

Look for the photos in the cloud before any repair

There is a good chance your photos are already copied online, and checking takes a few minutes on a computer or on another phone. If they are there, you do not even need to repair the phone to get your photos back.

Android phone: Google Photos and your Google account

Sign in to Google Photos with the same email as the broken phone. If backup was on, the photos appear in date order. Also check Google Drive and WhatsApp, which usually keeps a copy of the images you sent and received.

iPhone: iCloud and Photos

On an iPhone, sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID and open Photos. If iCloud Photos was on, your library is there. If you backed up to a computer, also look for the most recent copy on it.

Other places where the photos may be

Many people forget they sent photos by message, email, or social media. Ask family and friends, and check the memory card, if your model uses one. It may not be the original-size photo, but it can still save an important memory.

Each defect has its own way to recover the photos

What you can do depends on what broke. The table shows the most common path for each situation, without promising a result: only an inspection of the phone can confirm it.

Broken or black screen, phone still on

If the phone turns on but the screen does not help, the photos are usually still saved. On many models, you can connect the phone to a computer, or use a mouse through the charging port when the model supports it, and navigate without touching the screen. Not every model allows this, and the passcode lock can get in the way. If that does not work, a screen replacement usually fixes it, and the content stays on the device.

Phone that does not turn on

A phone that does not turn on does not always have a serious problem. It may just be a worn-out battery or a dirty or damaged charging port, and both repairs are quick. That is why the diagnosis starts with the simplest cause and only then goes to the board.

Wet phone

If the phone got wet, the clock is working against you. Turn it off, do not charge it, do not press the buttons, and do not use a hair dryer or rice. Moisture and corrosion keep advancing while the device sits, so take it to a repair shop as soon as possible. At Help Cell, the wet-phone service is called corrosion removal, and photo recovery comes after the device has been assessed.

Hard fall or board fault

When the board is hit, the repair is done with micro-soldering, bench work that needs an experienced technician. This repair is not always possible, and the chance of reaching the photos only shows up after the phone is opened and examined.

Mistakes that erase photos for good

Most photos that are lost for good were lost after the defect, not because of it. Avoiding these mistakes keeps your chances of recovering the photos.

  • Factory reset to "see if it comes back": this erases the phone's data.
  • Plugging in a phone that got wet over and over, which can cause a short circuit.
  • Opening the phone at home with the wrong tools and tearing the cables on the board.
  • Installing "miracle recovery" apps from doubtful sources, which can steal your data or make the problem worse.
  • Handing the phone to someone who does not explain what they will do with your data.
  • Waiting weeks with a wet phone or a swollen battery stored in a drawer.

Why waiting makes it worse

In a wet phone, corrosion keeps advancing over time. With a swollen battery, the risk goes up if you try to charge it. In both cases, the sooner the device is assessed, the better.

When to take the broken phone to a repair shop

Take the phone to a repair shop when the photos are not in the cloud and you cannot copy them yourself, or when the defect involves water, a hard fall, or a phone that does not turn on. The assessment shows what the problem is and whether recovery is possible, before you decide on a repair.

Help Cell is a phone repair shop in Florianópolis, open since 2007, at Floripa Shopping. We repair phones of all brands, plus iPad and MacBook. It is not always possible to guarantee the photos, and the shop only confirms what it can do after seeing the device. See how the phone data recovery service works.

What to bring and what to tell us

Bring the phone, the original charger if you have it, and the unlock passcode. Tell us everything that happened: a fall, water, a previous repair attempt. Without this information, the diagnosis takes longer.

Repair the phone to use the photos again

Often the simplest path is to repair the phone and use the photos normally. If the screen broke, a screen replacement gives you access again. If the battery failed, a battery replacement fixes it. Only when the defect goes deeper does the conversation turn to data recovery, and then the price is agreed on WhatsApp, with no fixed number before the assessment.

Be careful with the privacy of your photos

Photos are personal data. Ask first how the phone will be handled, and also read the guide Will I lose my data when I repair my phone?, which explains what changes in each type of repair.

Checklist before you act

These three blocks fit on one sheet of paper and help you avoid the most common losses.

Right now, at home

  • Do not charge or turn on the phone if it got wet.
  • Look for the photos in Google Photos, iCloud, and WhatsApp.
  • Write down the phone model and what happened.

When you ask for help

  • Ask whether the repair shop can try to save the photos in your case.
  • Ask for the price before you approve any service.
  • Say that your goal is to save the photos, not only to fix the phone.

After recovery

  • Copy the photos to a computer or to the cloud right away.
  • Turn on automatic backup on the new or repaired phone.
  • Check how the 90-day warranty works for the service done.

Frequently asked questions about recovering photos from a broken phone

Can I recover photos from a phone that does not turn on?

In many cases, yes, but it depends on the cause. If the problem is the battery or the charging port, the repair usually gives you access again. If it is the board, only the assessment can tell whether the memory can still be reached.

How much does it cost to recover the photos?

The price depends on the model and the defect. Send a message on WhatsApp +55 48 99110-7381 and Help Cell will tell you the price after understanding your case.

Does a phone that fell in the water still have the photos?

Often yes, if you turn it off right away and do not charge it. What destroys the phone is turning it on while it is wet and letting corrosion advance. The sooner it reaches the workbench, the better.

Do I need the phone passcode?

In most cases, yes, because the content is protected by the lock. Help Cell does not unlock devices, so try to remember the passcode or recover access through your Google or Apple account.

Does a factory reset help save the photos?

No. A factory reset erases the phone's data. Only do it if the photos are already saved somewhere else.

Can I try to recover the photos myself with a program?

Programs can help in some simple cases, such as copying from a phone that turns on. But many promise more than they deliver, and using a bad program on a phone with a defect can make things worse. When in doubt, ask for an assessment.

Will I lose the photos if I replace the screen or the battery?

When the screen or the battery is replaced, the memory is not touched. Even so, if the phone still turns on, make a backup first, just to be safe.
