When a MacBook won't turn on, the cause can be anything from a faulty charger to a failure on the logic board, which is the main board of the computer. Help Cell first checks the simple and low-cost parts (charger, cable, charging port and battery) and only then moves on to the board. Describe the problem on WhatsApp and you will get a clear idea of what it may be.

Why the MacBook won't turn on

A MacBook that won't turn on almost always has one of four causes: the power doesn't arrive, the battery doesn't deliver power, the logic board has failed, or the system froze before showing the image. Finding out which one it is makes the difference between a simple fix and a bench repair.

The computer only turns on when a whole chain works: wall outlet, charger, cable, charging port, battery, board and screen. If one link fails, the MacBook looks dead, and from the outside the symptom is usually the same in all four cases.

When it is only a power problem

A worn-out charger or cable is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix. A bent wire near the connector, a bent tip or dirt in the charging port stop the power from arriving, and the MacBook drains until it goes off completely.

When the battery has reached the end of its life

A very worn or swollen battery can stop the MacBook from turning on, even with the charger plugged in. In that case, the device works again after a MacBook battery replacement.

When the problem is on the logic board

The logic board holds the processor, the memory and the circuits that distribute power. A drop, liquid, an electrical surge or a component that burned out can leave it unresponsive. The repair is done at the bench, with micro-soldering, and this is where the technician's experience matters most.

Signs

Signs that your MacBook needs a technician

If you recognize one of these six signs, stop trying on your own and contact Help Cell.

Nothing happens when you press the buttonNo light, no fan noise and no image, even with the charger plugged in.
It turns on, but the screen stays blackThe startup sound plays, but no image appears.
It only works when plugged inIt shuts off as soon as you unplug the cable, even with a full battery.
It won't chargeThe charger is connected, but the battery level doesn't go up.
It restarts or shuts down by itselfIt starts to boot, freezes in the middle and goes back to the beginning.
It stopped after liquid or a dropThe problem started right after coffee was spilled on it or it took a hit.

What to test at home before taking the MacBook in

A few simple tests can rule out the easiest causes in a few minutes and help the technician reach the fault faster. Only do what is safe, and stop at the first smell of burning or excessive heat.

Test the charger, the cable and the outlet

Plug the charger into a different outlet and, if you can, try another charger that is compatible with your model. Check the cable from end to end: exposed wire, a visible bend or a darkened connector means the part is failing.

Let it charge for a while

If the battery is completely empty, the MacBook can take a few minutes plugged in before it shows any sign of life. Wait a little before deciding that it doesn't charge.

Disconnect everything that is plugged in

Remove USB drives, adapters, monitors and external hard drives. A faulty accessory can block the startup and make it look like the computer is dead.

Look inside the charging port

With the MacBook off and unplugged, use a flashlight to check for dust, lint or dirt inside the port. Do not put a needle or any metal object in it: you can damage the contacts.

Don't keep trying if there is a warning sign

If the MacBook got very hot, smelled of burning or its base is bulging, unplug it from the outlet and do not try to turn it on again. A swollen battery is a real risk and must be replaced by a technician.

Step by step

How Help Cell diagnoses a MacBook that won't turn on

Four steps, from your first contact until you know what your MacBook has.

  1. 1

    You tell us what happened

Send us the model and what the MacBook does when you turn it on. If it was dropped or had liquid on it, let us know right away.

  2. 2

    We give you first guidance

Our team tells you what to test and whether it is worth bringing the device in. Often we can already suspect the cause.

  3. 3

We check it at the bench

The technician checks the charger, the charging port, the battery and the board, from the simplest to the most complex.

  4. 4

You approve and follow the repair

Once you have the diagnosis, you decide. Nothing is replaced or repaired without your OK.

Causes and repair options

How much it costs to repair a MacBook that won't turn on

The price depends on the cause: replacing a charger is not the same as repairing a board. That is why Help Cell does not publish a single price. Describe the problem on WhatsApp and our team will explain the options and the price for your case.

Factors that change the price of the repair
FactorHow it affects the priceExample
Cause of the faultSimple parts cost less than a board repair.A changed cable versus a board with a burned component.
MacBook modelNewer models usually have more expensive parts.A recent MacBook Pro versus an older Air.
Time at the benchBoard repairs take more hours of work.Tracing a short circuit on the board.
Contact with liquidCorrosion spreads and adds to the work.Coffee spilled on the keyboard.
Several faults togetherA swollen battery or a broken screen adds to the repair.A drop that damaged both the board and the screen.

What nobody tells you about a MacBook that won't turn on

Rushing and panic make many people turn a simple fault into a worse one. These are the most common mistakes.

Common mistakes with a MacBook that won't turn on

Trying to turn it on again and again from the same outlet

If there was liquid or a short circuit, every attempt to turn it on can burn more components. If the device gave no sign of life at all, stop and ask for guidance.

Using any charger you find

Low-quality chargers deliver uneven power and can damage the board. Use one that is compatible with your model and from a reliable source.

Opening the MacBook without experience

The screws and internal cables are small and fragile. Opening it the wrong way can turn a simple fault into a board problem.

Drying it with a hair dryer or putting it in rice

Heat can warp parts, and rice does not remove the moisture under the components. If liquid got inside, see the wet MacBook page.

Checklist: before you take the MacBook in

Write down what happened before it stopped

A drop, liquid, an update that froze or a power cut help the technician go straight to the cause.

Bring the original charger

With your own charger, the technician can tell a charger fault apart from a device fault.

Think about your files

If the MacBook turns on for a few minutes, copy the most important files. If it doesn't turn on, let us know: the board repair is what brings the files back, when that is possible.

Efficient service on WhatsApp from Mykael and in the store from Josué. Excellent service! I took my phone in to replace the charging connector, but the technician checked it and, after a cleaning, found that the replacement was not necessary. The store did not charge for the cleaning either. Transparent, honest service and quality work. I recommend Help Cell!

Questions

Frequently asked questions about a MacBook that won't turn on

My MacBook is dead. Can it be fixed?

In most cases yes, but only the diagnosis can tell for sure. A MacBook that looks "dead" may only have a bad charger or a worn-out battery. If it is the board, the repair depends on which components were affected. Tell us about your case on WhatsApp +55 48 99110-7381.

How much does it cost to repair a MacBook that won't turn on?

It depends on the cause, the model and the time at the bench. A charger is very different from a board repair. Describe the problem on WhatsApp and Help Cell will give you the price for your case.

How long does the repair take?

It depends on the cause. Screen and battery repairs take up to 2 hours on most models, but a board diagnosis needs more time. The store will tell you the time for your case after checking the device.

Will I lose my files?

Your files are stored on the MacBook's storage, which is usually not touched in a power or board repair. Even so, no repair is completely without risk, so it is always best to have a backup. Tell the team how important your files are before we start.

The MacBook only turns on when plugged in. Is it the battery?

Most likely. A worn or swollen battery can no longer hold power, and the computer only works while plugged into the charger. See the MacBook battery replacement page, but confirm it first during the check.

My MacBook got wet and won't turn on. What do I do?

Turn it off, unplug it and do not try to turn it on again. The sooner the MacBook is cleaned, the less damage the corrosion will do. Read MacBook with liquid on the keyboard: steps and chemical cleaning.

The screen is black, but the MacBook seems to be on. Is it the screen?

It could be. If the startup sound plays, the lights come on or the fan spins, but there is no image, the fault may be in the screen, its cable or the board. See the MacBook screen replacement page and ask for a check.

Does the repair come with a warranty?

Yes, the repair comes with a 90-day warranty, under the rules on the warranty page. It does not cover drops, liquid or misuse after the repair.
