What is MacBook thermal paste
The thermal paste is a thin compound that fills the tiny gap between the chip that gets hot and the metal part that carries the heat away. Without it, there would be air in between, and air conducts heat very poorly. With the paste, the heat leaves the processor, reaches the heat sink, and then goes out of the notebook.
Over the years and many heat-and-cool cycles, this paste hardens, cracks and loses its ability to carry heat. The MacBook still turns on, but it starts to work hotter than it should.
What the replacement does in practice
The technician opens the MacBook, removes the old paste, cleans the surfaces and applies a new, thin layer. The goal is to recover the heat transfer the device had when it was new. It does not change any settings, does not erase files and does not touch macOS.
